My grandmother cross stitches and watches the news in the evening
She rubs her feet together so much her socks wear through
My grandfather sits very still, reclined with his hands resting on his stomach
Whenever a women's underwear commercial comes on
My grandmother says, "Rodney, close your eyes"
My grandfather obliges, and closes his eyes
He's smiling the whole time
And I wonder
If he's just picturing the commercial in his mind
Or if he's remembering my grandmother
In the eighth grade
When he passed her a note that said
"I'm going to marry you"
